Laundering Info - All Fabrics

When it comes to sewing, one of the most important lessons is proper laundering and garment care to ensure your carefully made pieces will stay in tip-top condition. The general rule is to wash your fabric in the same manner as you would wash your finished item, and below you will find some helpful instructions to optimise your laundry routine.

Pre-washing? Non-negotiable!

If you do not pre-wash your fabric (regardless of whether it is pre-shrunk) you risk possible shrinkage and warping of the fibres. Some new fabrics may bleed dye in the first couple of washes and so pre-washing separately prevents a possible laundry-day disaster.

Cold, Gentle Machine Wash is the MVP

Hand washing is even better, but not everyone has time for that. Ensure that any bright colours are washed separately and avoid wringing or twisting to remove excess water.

What To Wash With?

A gentle detergent is best. Avoid the use of fabric softener and scent beads as they leave residue on fabric.

On Drying...

Line dry in shade for best result - tumble-drying can shorten the lifespan of your garments, particularly those which contain elastane.

This advice applies generally to cotton and linen fabrics. For other fibres, consult the product listing page for specific instructions, or contact us!
